Singin' in the Rain

The UMD theater department is currently running its production of the classic musical “Singin’ In The Rain,” by Betty Comden and Adolph Green.

Set in Hollywood during the early days of talking pictures, a romantic leading actor and his side-kick focus on an aspiring actress as an unlikely candidate to replace the current leading lady with less-than-dulcet vocal tones.

The theater department opened their show on Friday, April 14. I attended the show on Saturday 15, and not only was I very impressed with the performance of the actors, but I was also impressed by the costumes, set designs and the pit orchestra’s musical performance.

The acting, singing and dancing skills of these performers is what made it great to watch and made it an overall entertaining experience. The performance skills of these young college-aged actors came across as the skills of more “seasoned” actors. I felt as if I was watching an off-Broadway production of “Singin’ In The Rain.”

This was the best production I have seen the UMD theater department put on. I highly recommend that others take the chance to attend this show, but do it soon as production only runs through Saturday, April 22.
