One community, thousands of cups of coffee: Coffee Fest 2023

Thousands of coffee professionals and enthusiasts gathered at the St. Louis County Depot last Saturday, Sept. 30 for the third annual Coffee Fest. Festivities included group “cupping” events, tastings and presentations about the industry alongside dozens of vendors. Organized by the Depot itself, the mission statement of the celebration is: “Connecting community with coffee culture in an extraordinary building.”

Riece Amundson is a manager at 190 Coffee and Tea. Here, she presents on the waste produced by the coffee industry.

“Most people drink coffee, which is why it’s so important to build a sense of community and appreciation around it,” said Olive Hollander, a local barista. “It’s something we use every day.”

The day consisted of two simultaneous schedules so that participants could explore both the building and the vendors. In the main theater, presenters from all areas of the industry presented throughout the day, featuring topics such as coffee’s history, culture, waste and DIY presentations. At the same time, outdoor tents had space available for gaming with the Loch Cafe, talking with coffee experts or simply enjoying the coffee. Hundreds of people bounced between the two throughout the day.

Closing sentiments before the latte art throwdown-finale came from an expert panel of Duluth-based baristas, where members of the public asked questions and baristas shared stories.

“I always wanted to be a barista when I grew up, and I hope it’s something that continues to be supported because coffee truly can bring people together,” said Gale Saint-Rose, who is another local barista.
