The month of April is federally recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) to raise awareness, increase prevention efforts and support survivors. UMD participates by holding lectures and social gatherings throughout April, as well as offering different resources for students who are subjected to sexual assault or sexual violence.

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), sexual assault is defined as “any nonconsensual sexual act proscribed by Federal, Tribal, or State law, including when the victim lacks capacity to consent.” Per Minnesota State Law, this includes when the victim is forced in any way such as physical, mental or emotional coercion. It is important to note that the term “sexual assault” covers a large number of actions, not just one specific situation.

Statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 26 men have experienced completed or attempted rape in their lifetime, and over half of women and 1 in 3 men have experienced sexual violence. College students are at a higher risk for sexual violence as 26.4% of female undergraduate students and 6.8% of male undergraduate students are survivors of sexual assault (RAINN).

There are multiple resources at UMD and in Duluth to assist sexual assault victims. The Women’s Resource and Action Center (WRAC) provides confidential support and helps victims process their experience by listening and recommending next steps. The Program for Aid to Victims of Sexual Assault (PAVSA) provides support through a PAVSA advocate. The advocate is a confidential resource who will assist the victim in finding a reporting pathway and further assistance. UMD Counseling Services is another on campus resource for victims wishing to speak about their experiences. They can help survivors work through trauma while also providing guidance on reporting if the survivor wishes.

Sexual assault is common, and it is important to know that you are not alone if this happens to you. There are people who can and want to help you. To reach out for assistance, visit any of the organizations listed above, report sexual assault through the link or call the hotlines below. You are important, and your story matters.
