UMD Career Fair: All About That Business

Thursday, Sept. 18, marked the annual UMD Business Career Fair, which was held in the Kirby Ballroom from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Over 50 businesses attended, including local and regional companies that offered insight into their work environments and provided job opportunities for inquisitive UMD students.

Throughout the room, there was significant communication and collaboration occurring between both the employers and students. Rachel Damman, a UMD sophomore and accounting major, expressed her approval of the event, commenting on the straightforward nature of the fair.

“I really like the simplicity of the fair. It’s easy to establish a one-on-one connection with an employer, which makes the whole experience more personal.” Damman added that she enjoyed the handouts that students were provided because they made the event a little less overwhelming.

The local YMCA was one of the many businesses that were in attendance, and was represented by HR Coordinator, Cassie Thuen. She provided insight into their involvement at the Career Fair and how it would impact the Northland community.

“I’ve already had a lot of great, positive interactions with students and the other employers here. While it’s not the YMCA’s first time at this career fair, it is mine, and I love that everyone seems to be enjoying each other’s company,” Thuen said.

Thuen went on to talk about her love for serving the community and encouraged UMD students to get involved wherever they can. Similar to the other businesses, you can get in contact through the YMCA’s website to explore volunteer and job opportunities.

Hosting the Business Career Fair was the UMD Career Center, led by Director Jill  Kolodozne. She is a crucial supporter of the futures of the UMD Student Body. Sitting at the table representing the Career Center, Kolodozne was encouraged by how many students attended the fair, and left students with some parting wisdom.

“Career fairs are the best opportunity for students to gain internships and experience,” Kolodozne said.

While the Business Career Fair won’t be hosted for another year, there are still plenty of opportunities to expand your professional future. Visit local and regional businesses to inquire about work opportunities, or stop by the Career Center for more information on career planning, volunteer opportunities, the job market and much more.
