UMD shutout 5-0 a night after doing the same to Western Michigan

A night after they shutout Western Michigan 3-0, the University of Minnesota Duluth were blanked in 5-0 in retaliation efforts by the Broncos.

Scoreless after the first 20, a pair of goals by sophomore defenseman and freshman forward Austin Rueschhoff gave Western an early 2-0 lead just 2:07 into the middle frame. At 16:52 freshman forward Paul Washe extended the Broncos lead to 3-0. A bit of controversy surrounded Washe’s tally as the goal was immediately waved off on the ice. After a lengthy video review the call on the ice was overturned.

Freshman forward Josh Passolt made it 4-0 Broncos at the 9:26 mark of the final period and junior forward Jade McMullen put the rest of the game on the game on burying a loose puck out front the Bulldog net with 54 tics left in regulation.

It was one of those nights no puck luck nights for the Bulldogs. Hitting two pipes within the same power play, UMD had their chances to regain some momentum.

“Disappointed for sure, right down to the last goal,” said UMD Head Coach Scott Sandelin. “Early I thought we had some chances, Blacker made some saves but we didn’t play hard enough. I told our guys before it was going to be a hard-fought game.”

The only stat UMD led in tonight was shots on goal. The Bulldogs put 31 shots on sophomore goaltender Ben Blacker while the Broncos scored their five goals on 20 shots.

UMD heads to Oxford next weekend to take on National Collegiate Hockey Conference opponent the Miami (OH) Redhawks.
