Men’s Basketball Wins in a Thrilling Home Opener

On Tuesday, Nov. 18, the Bulldog men’s basketball team faced off against The College of St. Scholastica Saints, coming out on top with a score of 89-58 to earn their 3rd straight victory of the season.
The game started with UMD winning the tip-off and an immediate layup by Mattie Thompson. This was followed by three free throws for the Bulldogs, bringing the score to 5-0. The Saints fought hard to get ahead and were able to by scoring two consecutive 3-point shots to bring the score to 6-5. Following this, both teams went point-for-point and ended up tying the score at 14-14 with 10 minutes left of the half.
The remainder of the half was met with the Bulldogs pulling a 12-2 to secure a 26-16 lead. The Saints tried to catch up, scoring 7 points in under a minute, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs were able to achieve several fast-breaks, ending with a score of 42-30.

The second half had a quiet start with neither team scoring for nearly two minutes. Caleb Siwek was able to get some points on the board for the Bulldogs with a layup that started a 13-5 Bulldog run to bring the score to 55-35. The Saints put in their all the rest of the game, but unfortunately could not overcome the Bulldogs' defense and ended the game with an 89-58 Bulldog win.
Caleb Siwek led the Bulldogs with 21 points, followed by Nick Katona with 14 points, and Jaden Morgan with 10 points. UMD had 44 rebounds, while Scholastica had 27. UMD had 8 steals, while Scholastica had 2, but Scholastica forced 11 turnovers compared to UMD’s 9.
The Bulldogs face off in the American Family Insurance Classic against Michigan Tech on Friday, Nov. 21, at 6 pm, and Lake Superior State University on Saturday, Nov 22. at 3:30 pm in the Romano Gymnasium.
