The Bulldogs took on the Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks this past Sunday, October 4, for a 3-0 win. This win marks the first time in 15 years that the Bulldogs have defeated Mankato.

Coming back from their 1-2 loss under St. Cloud State, the Bulldogs showed up with a new life inside them against Mankato. The Bulldogs tried 8 shots before they got one off of a header by Nora Helvig that found Alyssa Doyle to put it in and bring the Bulldogs up 1-0.

The Bulldogs held the Mavericks to just one more shot the rest of the half and recorded their second goal at the 40-minute mark. Marissa VanDeHei was able to record her first goal of the season off a header fed by Kami Beavers, bringing the Bulldogs up 2 at the half.

The second half saw Mankato try to regain their footing, putting up more shots on average than the Bulldogs, but was unfortunately unsuccessful. Junior Ava Killian came in to secure her first career goal at the 72nd minute mark to bring the Bulldogs to a season-high three goals for the game and secure the win for UMD at 3-0.

The stunning performance from the Bulldogs’ defense really shone through this game, holding the Mavericks, who average 2 goals a game, scoreless. The stats back this claim as UMD outshot Mankato on goal 14-5, and goaltender Edy Halverson was able to record her fifth shutout of the season.

The Bulldogs are headed to Moorhead next to take on the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons on October 9 at 3 p.m.
