Bulldog Basketball Conquers Against University of Jamestown

The UMD Bulldogs men’s and women’s basketball teams faced off against the University of Jamestown Jimmies Thursday, Feb. 12th in an exciting matchup. Both Bulldog teams came out victorious earning the men their first win against the Jimmies since they joined the NSIC last season and the women remaining undefeated. 

The women's game started with a 3-pointer by Maria Counts almost a minute into the game. The Jimmies quickly responded by making a 3-pointer of their own to tie the score. The Bulldogs then went on a 19-4 scoring run to secure a lead of 22-7. The Jimmies tried to catch up scoring 6 points in the last minute of the quarter, but it was no match for the Bulldogs ending the quarter with a score of 28-13.

The Bulldogs went on a 7-0 scoring run to start out the second quarter. This was followed by the Bulldogs scoring 6 points in under a minute to bring the score to 38-21 with half of the quarter left. The Jimmies put on the defense from this point, allowing the Bulldogs to only score 2 more points the whole quarter while they went on a 7-2 run, bringing the score to 40-29.

Coming out of the half the Bulldogs went on a 22-4 scoring run to bring the score to 62-33 and the Bulldogs to their highest lead thus far. The Jimmies fought their hardest during the fourth quarter, but unfortunately were no match for the Bulldogs as the game ended with a Bulldog victory and a score of 83-52.

Myra Moorjani showed out, leading the Bulldogs in scoring with 21 points followed closely by Claire Bjorge with 18 points. The Bulldogs scored 26 points off turnovers and 34 points in the paint while the Jimmies scored 4 and 24 points, respectively.

The men’s game started with the Jimmies winning the tip-off and scoring a layup within 20 seconds of the game. The Bulldogs responded to this with a 7-0 run bringing the score to 7-2. The Jimmies tried to come out of this by scoring 5 consecutive points in an attempt to tie the score, but the Bulldogs did not let this last long with Mattie Thompson scoring 5 points in 30 seconds. After this the Bulldogs and Jimmies went back and forth scoring 10-10 points until the Bulldogs were able to take back control of the basket scoring 11 points, thus bringing the score to 41-17. The Jimmies tried to gain their heat back yet again, but unfortunately were unable to overcome the Bulldogs defense and the half ended with a score of 46-23.

In an attempt to get their momentum up, the Jimmies came out of the half with a 5-point run over the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs, however, were able to go on an 11-4 scoring run after this, making the score 60-32. As hard as the Jimmies fought, they were unable to keep up with the Bulldogs this time and the game ended with a score of 90-55, Bulldogs win.

Noah Paulson led the Bulldogs in scoring with 23 points, followed by Mattie Thompson with 17 points, and Caleb Siwek with 13 points. The Bulldogs scored 10 points off turnovers and 7 fast-break points.

Both Bulldog Men’s and Women’s teams face off against MSU Moorhead on Saturday, Feb. 21 in Romano Gymnasium to end their regular season play. The Women’s game tips off at 1:30 p.m. with the Men starting at 3:30 p.m.
