The Bark is Hiring!

The official newspaper of UMD, The Bark, is hiring for the 2026-2027 school year! We are looking for dedicated students who are informed and engaged in the greater campus community. Be a leader in student media as the next Editor-in-Chief or Business Manager.  Submit your application: resume and cover letter by Thursday, April 9. For the position of Editor-in-Chief, we are looking for an applicant who is passionate about and familiar with journalism. 

This includes:

  • Recruit, train and teambuild 

  • Edit and publish student works  

  • Manage Online/print content 

  • Lead weekly pitch meetings 

  • Chair of the Board of Publications

Required qualifications

  • Must be a part-time or full-time UMD student and commit to a one-year appointment

  • Must have access to the internet and a functioning cell phone.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Understand journalism standards and ethics

  • Ability to work with a diverse student staff

  • Leadership and management skills

  • Familiarity with news writing, social media and website management

  • Ability to lead a team to deadlines, publishing content every week

For the position of Business Manager, we are looking for an applicant who is proficient in the business side of running an organization. Communication and LSBE students have been successful candidates in the past, but it is open to all students.

This includes:

  • Digital & print advertising sales 

  • Marketing campaign creation

  • Payroll and budget management 

  • Collaborating with web & social media content creation

  • Media Analytics 

  • Leadership and team building

Journalism-specific experience is NOT a requirement for this position, though it is beneficial.

Requirements:

  •  Must have access to the internet and a functioning cell phone.

  •  Must be a part-time or full-time UMD student and commit to a one-year appointment 

Preferred qualifications:

  •  Familiarity with business and/or media ethics and interest in media, marketing, or sales.

  •  Business, retail, customer service, or marketing experience 

  •  Leadership experience and an interest in creating a positive team environment.

  •  Basic understanding of social media and web analytics
