I Bought Me A Cat: Student Performance

I Bought Me A Cat: student performance by Samuel Nelson

On Saturday, the 28th of March, Samuel Nelson sang his heart out for his show I Bought Me a Cat

The performance had three songs sung in German, two songs in Italian, and six songs in English. My personal favorite was the song Ma Belle Evangeline, from the Princess and the Frog movie.

Ma Belle Evangeline, from the Princess and the Frog movie, was sung with such emotion that I felt as though I was in the movie, instead of sitting in an auditorium. With a few lines in French, Samuel Nelson is a modern Renaissance man.

The songs and lyricism were amazing. Nelson did not miss a beat.

In the title piece, I Bought Me a Cat, after each verse, the last line was repeated, like in a round. It went from just singing “my cat said fiddle eye fee” to “my horse said neigh neigh, my cow said moo moo, my pig said griffey griffey, my hen said shimmy shack shimmy shack, my goose said quaw quaw, my duck said quaa quaa, and my cat said fiddle eye fee”.

Towards the end of the performance, Nelson got more comfortable with the stage, and with the comfort he gained, he gained confidence. This was seen throughout the ending, with the final song I am the very model of a modern Major-General.

In this song, Nelson kept increasing the tempo, the speed, and at some point, I was sure he was going to falter, but he persisted.
