As a student here at UMD, Lucas Gross was able to compose and have seven pieces performed at Weber Hall this past Sunday.
The first song was titled Mirror on a Trumpet Duet. Second came the Mutilation of Idolization on piano, followed by Tense Thoughts as a brass quartet.
The fourth song that was played was called Sound Hero. This was different from other concerts or performances as it was electronically performed; no one was on stage while this was being performed.
Sound Hero sounded like it sounds, part of a video game - possibly a vintage game at your hometown bowling alley.
False Hope was the fifth song and was performed on piano. Personally, this was my favorite song because throughout the piece, I felt like I was able to experience what Gross wanted: the highs of being filled with hope, with the fall of realizing your hope was for nothing.
The brass quartet performed again with the song Poems of the End, which was based upon the poems by E.M.D. This piece was a three-section part: Enemy, I’m Fine, and The Basement.
I liked this piece. I was entertained by the three different parts, feeling almost as if they were three different songs with one common theme.
Finally, the concert concluded with the song We Continue, written in three parts: The Workshop’s Toil, Views from a Kayak, and Return Stamp.
Of these, I enjoyed the Views from a Kayak the most. The song felt like experiencing a calm hike on a nice day with a peaceful waterfall trickling through the woods.
